Follows lonely bartender Bob Saginowski through a covert scheme of funneling cash to local gangsters – “money drops” – in the underworld of Brooklyn bars. Under the heavy hand of his employer and cousin Marv, Bob finds himself at the center of a robbery gone awry and entwined in an investigation that digs deep into the neighborhood’s past where friends, families, and foes all work together to make a living – no matter the cost.

Review :

Tom Hardy Shines and James Gandolfini Leaves Us With a Memorable Performance.

"I just tend the bar," Bob Saginowski innocently states in this under- the-radar gem of a film. Tom Hardy plays Bob, a quiet, reserved bartender at his cousin Marv's bar. Cousin Marv is played by James Gandolfini in his final role. The Drop is getting a lot of attention because of Gandolfini, who gives another memorable performance, but The Drop is much more than an opportunity to see one our generation's greatest actors one last time, it's one of the best films of the year.

In The Drop, Marv owns a local neighborhood bar that also happens to be a "drop bar", which means the bar essentially collects money from illegal betting and god knows what else and then delivers it to the local Chechen gang. Gandolfini plays Marv as a Tony Soprano that never was. A guy that tried to get into the game, but couldn't really cut it when the big guys came into town. Those "big guys" are the Chechen mob that have taken over Marv's bar. It's his bar in name only and he's relegated to serving drinks and cleaning up spills. Gandolfini plays Marv as a bitter, beaten down man. It's vintage Gandolfini and a perfect way to end a career that was cut way too short.

As one actor takes his final bow, it's another actor who officially arrives. The Drop is clearly Tom Hardy's film. Granted, Hardy certainly hasn't come out of no where. He burst on the mainstream scene with Inception and should have become a household name after his performance as Bane in The Dark Knight Rises. He didn't, and I'm not really sure why. He seemingly has everything you'd want in a leading man.

Hardy's performance in The Drop should finally change that. I know it's early, but it's Oscar worthy. Hardy plays Bob with such an authentic nature that it's downright astounding. He really inhabits this character. Bob seems to take everything in stride, nothing seems to bother him. When he is confronted by the Chechen mobsters, he keeps his head down and chooses every word with precision, knowing that his life depends on it. Bob is non-threatening and unassuming and almost comes off as simple-minded, but as the film progresses, it's clear something is brewing beneath the surface. Bob is an example of a guy who is a product of his environment. He's a good man that doesn't really have a choice in life. He either adapts to survive or dies.

Bob also has a big heart as is evidenced when he rescues a puppy that has been beaten and literally thrown in the trash. This is where he meets Nadia, played by Noomi Rapace (Prometheus). Nadia is also reserved and seems wounded in some way. It makes sense that The Drop is written by Dennis Lahane (writer of Mystic River, Gone Baby Gone and Shutter Island) who adapted the film from his short story "Animal Rescue," a title with more than one meaning. Not only does Bob rescue an injured dog, but both he and Nadia seem like animals that need rescuing in one way or another.

The Drop is the kind of film that Hollywood just doesn't make anymore. It really does feel like it was ripped right out of the 80's. It has a slow, deliberate pace that perfectly builds suspense. The Drop is a character driven film that constructs each scene with great dialogue and fantastic acting. The director allows his characters to inhabit the world they live in. It's the wardrobe and the set design that really help bring everything together and add to the authenticity of the film. Everything seems organic and not like it's part of a movie set.

The Drop is a film lovers film. It has everything you could possibly ask for: a top notch cast, great direction, dialogue, set design, cinematography, and an understated score. You name it, and The Drop has it. It's easily one of my favorite films of the year. We need more films like The Drop. Go see it.

It’s the ultimate buddy cop movie except for one thing: they’re not cops. When two struggling pals dress as police officers for a costume party, they become neighborhood sensations. One of the worst movie I've ever seen

This is the first time I write a review on IMDb and like most others, it's because the movie I leave the review is really really bad.

If you want to watch this movie, well… watch the trailer, the trailer contains the best scenes in the movie and that's it. The movie makes no sense, it's just illogical even if you're looking for a comedy movie.

Let's be cop has a "classic" story, 2 clumsy "looser" guys trying to change their life, then they got into trouble and they decide to face it like men, then they become heroes of the movie. This is not a full movie, it's just a collection of funny ideas (which you can see all of them in the trailer) combined. Everything is ridiculous. Sure, there are points in the movie that it's actually entertaining but after all, it won't worth your time. Save your time and save your money, don't watch this!

As i expected

I came to November Man expecting a direct to DVD kind of film which turned out exactly as I thought (thank goodness for 5$ movie at Palazoo) With that said it was so kinda feels like Sean Connorys Never Say Again for Peirce Bronsan in regards to his role as 007. Bronsan is no means a terrible actor, but he was the only really good actor in the film. NM touches certain areas only to never go back which results in a confusing plot, rushed and very unfufiling ending. The action scenes were average, mostly just shootouts lacking anything different/exciting. It's a rental for any Bronsan or action fans but if you miss it, don't feel sad about it. **

The family of talented cook, Hassan Kadam, has a life filled with both culinary delights and profound loss. Drifting through Europe after fleeing political violence in India that killed the family restaurant business and their mother, the Kadams arrive in France. Once there, a chance auto accident and the kindness of a young woman, Marguerite, in the village of Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val inspires Papa Kadam to set up a Indian restaurant there. Unfortunately, this puts the Kadams in direct competition with the snobbish Madame Mallory’s acclaimed haute cuisine establishment across the street where Marguerite also works as a sous-chef. The resulting rivalry eventually escalates in personal intensity until it goes too far. In response, there is a bridging of sides initiated by Hassan, Marguerite and Madame Mallory herself, both professional and personal, that encourages an understanding that will change both sides forever.

Review :

A thoroughly enjoyable movie

I can't believe no has has reviewed this already. I just saw it, and had a great time.

There's really nothing not to like. It's a standard story of a clash between two cultures, French and Indian cooking in this case, but rather than just playing it out as that, we see the young Indian chef take an interest in French haute cuisine and experiment with how he can mix one with the other. The head of the haute gamme traditional French restaurant located in the same small French town, played by Helen Mirren, doesn't just fall in love with Indian cooking, as you would expect to happen on a made-for-TV movie about this topic. She grows to appreciate what Indian cuisine can add to classical French cuisine.

She also has certain important French Republican values that make her a more interesting character. She does not hesitate to try to ruin the opening of the rival, Indian restaurant. But when that restaurant is attacked by racists with cries of "France for the French," part of the current Nationalist discourse, she fires the person she believes to have been involved in it and publicly washes away the Nationalist graffiti sprayed at the entrance to the Indian restaurant. (This is one of the many important scenes that are new with the movie and have no equivalent of the novel.) The characters are not caricatures, in other words.

There are times when the movie reminded me of Ratatouille – the in-kitchen rivalry between sous-chefs, for example. (Almost the entire subplot dealing with Hassan and Marguerite is also new with the movie and not in the novel. The novel does mention, largely in passing, that Hassan becomes romantically involved with the sous-chef, Marguerite. But she is never developed as a character in the novel, does not play any significant role in Hassan's development as a chef – it is Mme. Mallory who gives Hassan the cook book, not Marguerite – etc.)

There were times when you could see the next step too far in advance. It's not a perfect movie.

There were also things implied in the movie that never got developed. Mirren's upscale French restaurant is in a typical 19th-century bourgeois villa. The Indians establish their restaurant in what is as clearly a southern French farm building, yet nothing is done with the contrast between bourgeois cooking that has become detached from the basic country cooking that would have taken place in that farmhouse and that has always been at the basis of the greatest French haute cuisine. (That's a theme developed nicely in Ratatouille, with the explanation of the title dish.) The novel touches on that theme from time to time, but never does anything with it either, and in fact seems to forget about it for long stretches. It's not a well-constructed novel. The movie script is much better, frankly.

That the movie does not develop this theme is particularly surprising because the very clear architectural contrast between the two restaurants is also new with the movie. In the novel, the Indian family opens their restaurant in another 19th century bourgeois house, described repeatedly as a "mansion," very similar to the one occupied by the two-Michelin-star traditional French restaurant. They are located across from each other, as in the movie, but in the middle of town, not out in the country. If the director – or whoever – of the movie decided to shift the locale so that he could put the Indians and their restaurant in what is very clearly an old farm house, why was this symbolism not developed?

There are, in fact, many very significant changes from the novel, interesting ones. Among other Academy Awards for which this movie should at least be nominated is Best Adaptation of Previously-existing material, or whatever that award is called. The script of this movie is very intelligent, but also very different from the section of the novel from which it was derived.

All the acting is good to first class.

It's a feel-good movie, yes, but a well-made one. Better, for example, than "Chef", which deals with some of the same issues, but not as well.

Go see it. But be prepared to leave hungry icon wink Streaming The Hundred Foot Journey Online

Review :

A lot of music and tears in this teenage romance tearjerker love story.

A Warner Brothers/MGM film. 'If I Stay' is a tearjerker film about a teenage-girl who experiences an out-of-body experience whilst in a coma.

The teenage-girl is played well by Chloe Grace Moretz. As film opens we discover that she is part of a sickly-sweet family that seems just too perfect. Off out together, they are involved in an accident. Miss Moretz's character, Mia Hall, comes to, but does not understand why she is being ignored by the emergency services, as she stumbles about in a dream-like state. Seeing herself, she starts to understand, as she goes to the hospital. These scenes all occur at the start of the film, the rest of the film is based at the hospital, with the majority of the film being flash-backs.

Director RJ Cutler has done a good job here. The scenes at the accident are, as said, rather dream-like, thus capturing the confused state of Miss Hall. Miss Moretz captures well the disorientation of her character. Both Director Mr Cutler and actress Miss Moretz capture well the out-of-body experience. As a disembodied spirit, Mia Hall has no physical abilities thus travel can only be achieved via open doors etc.

Thus, 'If I Stay' is completely different from 'Ghost' and 'Truly, Madly, Deeply', both of 1990. Those films were about the interaction of living breathing humans and the spirits of dead humans. Not so in this film. 'If I Stay' does however share one thing with both of those other films, a love story.

Flashbacks tell us that the teenage schoolgirl Mia Hall, has fallen in love with older boy Adam, played by Jamie Buckley. The two were attracted to each other, and did fall in love, but were troubled with what might be described as musical differences. Thus this film has a major musical plot-line that reminds of the recently screened 'Begin Again'. The films are similar in many ways, the major one being that we viewers get to hear a fair bit of music. Mia and boyfriend Adam are both musicians, though very different ones. However the music does provide one further link to 'Truly, Madly, Deeply'.

The two young lovers are ably supported by a great cast, all of whom are good, but special mention should go to those playing family members. Joshua Leonard plays Mia's father. He and the Director got the flashback scenes just right, they are also funny, as we see the younger wild rocker turn into the more sedate parent. Hair-styles in those scenes was particularly good. Mireille Enos, playing the mother, has some poignant scenes with her daughter. However the most emotional scenes were with veteran actor Stacy Keach. He gives a stand-out performance, particularly in one very emotional and very important scene.

Preparing for her role in Kick Ass (2010), Miss Moretz trained with a stunt-crew for three months and also did most of her own stunts. For her musical role in 'If I Stay', Miss Moretz is also reported to have engaged in much musical study. Last year she gave a tremendous performance in the 2013 remake of 'Carrie'. Here, in 'If I Stay', we once again see Miss Moretz play a somewhat shy girl, that sometimes seems dreamily unaware, but that at other times capture perfectly the utmost depths of the rawest of emotions.

Shauna Cross wrote the screenplay of the Gayle Forman novel. Director RJ Cutler has done a great job. Outside shots, particularly those featuring different seasons, were done well, ably capturing the sense of passing time.

This teenage love-story shares a supernatural spiritual love story like 'Ghost' and 'Truly, Madly, Deeply'. Like 'TMD' it also has some hauntingly beautiful music. The film is also about music and could be described as a teenage version of 'Begin Again'. If you liked any of those films, then 'If I Stay' will appeal to you.

This tearjerker deserves 10/10 but needs a hanky.

Review :

Heart warming ~ and a joy to watch … (rating: 10)

The Little Room (2010) delivers a heart warming story in no nonsense terms without fanfare. The entire concept is elegant. The central character, Rose, a nurse (Florence Loiret Caille) prematurely returns to work after a personal neonatal tragedy. On her rounds as community nurse one of her new patients is Edmond (Michael Bouquet) now is in his eighties. Circumstances bring the two into closer contact more frequently so that an unlikely rich bond of friendship gradually but steadily ensues.

Far from being the easiest of clients for Rose, Edmond is a man, who having lost his beloved wife some 40 years earlier, has only his unloving and unsupportive son Jacques (Joel Delsaut) to call 'family'. For Edmond, a diabetic, life holds few surprises or joys and understandably he is undisturbed at the idea of giving up on the will to live. Somewhat cruelly, Jacques intends his father be taken into care so that he may start afresh in New York. That is Edmond's likely fate until the encounter with Rose.

While Rose is portrayed as neither glamorous nor affected she possesses a warm heart and clear mind. She encourages Edmond to do the simplest of things such as eating, and to accept insulin shots. Few words are exchanged but her presence and willingness to regard Edmond as a man, and as a real human being has a profound effect that slowly restores his will to live little-by-little.

A small cooker fire transpires in Edmond's home. Rose is there and deals with it – though black smoke chars the kitchen. The son enters, sees the state of the kitchen and along with Rose's boss they both blame her for allowing the fire, while also accusing her of becoming too involved. Her boss decides Rose is not yet ready to return to work so soon after losing an unborn child, compelling her to take a lengthy "vacation".

Marc (Eric Cavayaka), Rose's live-in partner, chooses to leave her to work abroad. After their separation Rose finds she has ample time available to care for Edmond whom she then takes to her own apartment where he stays. It becomes apparent Rose feels a need to substitute for her lost child by caring for Edmond ~ in a wholesome way. An undoubted friendship develops. They start to talk, dine together and go out. Edmond takes an interest in Rose once he realises that she miscarried and still grieves long after her tragic loss. Rose takes Edmond to her child's cemetery; where at the graveside he shows her which plants will last longest. While this may sound sombre or slow it is incredibly touching – the pace of events seem real, there's little music – it just comes down to immaculate acting by the two principle leads so that this story works brilliantly.

Edmond stays with Rose, which they enjoy keeping as their secret, while Jacques unaware of this situation eventually reports his father as a missing person. Marc returns to Rose and also forms a bond with Edmond.

Dramatically, the story picks-up apace when Edmond chooses to go on a mission and journeys alone to where memories of his deceased wife are strongest. The effect of Edmond's sudden unannounced disappearance stirs the deepest emotions in Rose.

Unfortunately, to avoid spoilers this where descriptions of the story stop!!! As so often the case with French cinema a human story is told in a fascinating and gripping way. Stéphanie Chaut and Véronique Reymond co-direct and co-write with empathy, immaculate timing, without interference of intrusive sound tracks and cleverly involve viewers in every character's situation. This tale is about humanity, compassion, dignity, and life's unexpected events; and not for a moment does it drag. A remarkable thing… in Florence Loiret Caille's portrayal of a ordinary dowdy community nurse she plays the part with undeniable charisma and subtly oozes sex appeal. If you can catch this film it should not be missed. It's a treat.
